We require to develop an application for Microsoft platforms (PCs or laptops) that will allow remote users to subscribe to and read regional news updates. The application will be incorporated within a more general application that will offer ships crews a host of services and products. However, if possible, it would be good to be able to offer this application as a completely separate product open to use by anyone. Remote users will not always have access to internet, but will have access to email. Updated news files will be sent each day to the ship depending on the subscription. File formats are open to what may be required – XML, text. News will be sent to an email address, and then automatically processed on arrival on the ship. This will copy any files to a folder on the network or laptop. The file can then be read by the application as required. The proposal is for you to offer a solution for this need and we would welcome your ideas or suggestions on how you believe you could achieve this. We have prepared a full specification for the features we require, but your initial bid would be based on the above information.

Greetings, I am developer with more than 15 years of experience in software industry. I have worked in many areas, including mail integration and different general purpose and specialized viewers (for example flash files, pdf, web pages (html), epub). I have a question on what type of news do you want to display. Are those news taken from certain web sites, or from some other format (pdf, doc)? Will you have rich media content (videos) or just simple text + images? Will this application be responsible (beside viewing and subscription) for aggregating news from various sorces and sending them to ship mail? My current idea are two (if you need aggregator as well) standalone applications, one for ship crews, viewing content, managing subscriptions. This application will check mail periodically for sent updates, parse them and make them available for reading. Another (aggregator) application will be used on main land (on your server for example) it will be responsible for aggregating news from various sources, packing them to certain format and sending to ships.

I propose building this application in Java to ensure that it can be used on a variety of environments without any incompatibility issues. News can be sent to the email address with a data attachment, which could be encoded in XML or JSON. Upon receiving the email, the attachment could be moved to the application's data folder using rules. Do all of the ships use the same email client? Alternatively, if each ship operates a local email server, the application could connect to this server and retrieve the data attachment automatically. Both of these approaches would require some basic configuration by the end-user but this will be relatively straightforward. Hi. I don't have enough info but: I would setup a news server on the ship that would pull/receive two types of information from the HQ using SMTP: 1. news (obviously :) ) 2. user database in encrypted form Upon receiving new version of user database, server would decrypt it and update a local copy. Users that have subscribed for the news on the shore, can now login using the same credentials and read news on the ship. No need for special news readers on laptops, netbooks, tablets and other BYOD jungle - saves a lot on support calls. They would just use a reader they used before they borded a ship. On the other hand, server would not need any special custom-made news server, you can use the same type as you use on the shore - also saves on admin support. You just need email processing service that would dispatch database and news appropriately. Or I misunderstood your request completely? :) Regards, Dejan a.k.a. Yagosh
