Steam has some energy, and machine perform some task Input energy= work output + losses now depending upon the losses, the input energy varies If your machine is supposed to perform heat exchanging stuff, then The volume of steam depends upon the amount of heat transfer and most importantly the design of the machine. If your machine performs some mechanical task :- turbine, actuator etc, then again it depends upon how much work output you want. Please discuss further, maybe I can help

What machines do you use? Usually steam consumption (e.g. mass/time) can only be estimated and not accurately calculated due to inconsistent variables.
