I have worked on a (unsuccessful) PS3 port of the ethereum-miner (ethminer) before. The Cell/Broadband-Engine required quite radical re-writing of most of the hashing related code. The Cell/B.E. consists of a (IBM) Power architecture processor (PPU) and 7 "Synergetic" Processor units (SPU) - which are very different from the power-processor (PPU) or any x86 processor. The project encompassed: • Managing the data bus for pre-emptive moving of data and instructions between the main-memory and the SPU caches. (The SPUs crunched data quickly but needed strict data cache and instructions from the PPU which choreographed the whole scene. DMA transfers were utilised too) • The code was optimised for SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) processing which the SPUs supported. This meant that the code had to withhold data processing immediately in favour of queuing sufficient data so SIMD can be efficient. • The architecture and libs were completely different. The GFLOPS obtained were very impressive for a decade old processor which beat today's processors (not GPUs) with only a one-fifth to one-tenth the transistor count. (Such a shame that Cell/B.E. is dead) • There was clustering using ethernet layer (but not TCP/IP at the higher stack) as the communication medium. What I'm trying to say is that I find blockchain technology very exciting and I think I can handle the lower level challenges on the processing and cryptology front as well as the network front.
