For secured template upgrade, the site need to be launched in another server / different folder in same server and upgradation to be applied to the copied version. On successful upgradation, following procedure can be used ( let us assume original site content is referred as [A], modified content is referred as [B] & another copy of original content is referred as [C]) 1. Make a copy of the original site [A] and launch it in a temporary folder in the same server [C]. 2. Redirect the site address to the new temporary location [C]. Opening the site in a browser with open the contents in [C] 3. Copy the modified site [B] to the original location overriding the original content [A] with the modified one [B]. 4. Check the final site for proper functioning. 5. Redirect back the site address back to old location. This way it can be assured that their will be no down-time for the site. As your site is created using a custom theme, it may take a major modification to keep the same look of the site, if another theme is used.
