I'm a English literature student in University. I need to have two assignments which are related to each other ready by the 1st of January. I will have to submit them on turn it in so it has to be authentic as the University must not know this work is not my own! The assignments question is: Examine the relationship between festivity and gender representation in Twelfth Night. (Twelfth night by Shakespeare) Assignment 1: Research Paper – preparation for the essay 1,000 words. The three parts of this assessment are a literature search, an annotated bibliography (three sections), and a synopsis of one research article. The literature search is outside the 1000 words. 1. The assessment for this module may introduce you to a form of assessment you have not encountered before. This is the Research Paper which is worth 20% of your marks. The research paper should come out of your independent work towards the essay. It is thus a stepping stone on your way to producing the essay for Assignment Four. First you should select one of the essay questions that have been provided for Assignment Four – the Essay. Then using this question you will begin to put together a research paper consisting of three parts; A. Literature Search B Annotated bibliography C Synopsis of an article. How do you go about this? A lot depends on the question you are going to approach. Say the topic is something to do with Volpone. You could spend a considerable time researching the play and indeed looking at the author Jonson. This would be quite time consuming. Type in Volpone to JSTOR (or a similar database) and you get hundreds of entries. This is where you need to think about what question you might be asking. Let’s say there are two possible questions one that says ‘Discuss the influence of prose satire on Jonson’s Volpone’ and the other might be ‘At what point in the play is Volpone a criminal? (note- here the title of the play is in italics because it’s a text but the character is not.) This would help you start to do your literature search because you would have more to go on. To answer the first question you might need to think about prose satire in itself as well as looking for articles or books that directly relate the two. To answer the second question you might think you only had to look through the play and say the point you think the character becomes a criminal. While this would be the first thing you do, to write a good essay you need to bring you in critical evidence. In this case that might range from articles directly on this subject- and there are several articles on Jonson’s moral position or theories of crime in the 16th century. Your literature search might then amount to a page or two of reasonably relevant articles set out in MLA format. Type in literature search to Google and you will find some sites that will help you. (The literature search isn’t part of the word count) B. An annotated bibliography is a Bibliography- like the one you have prepared for your Literature search, except this time you are commenting on the usefulness of the search for your topic or question. It would take a long time to comment on all the articles you have found so we want you to focus on three. For this the three have to include at least one: i) chapter from a book ii) an article found on an electronic site either through Jstor or an online journal. All articles need full reference In your annotation you should briefly describe the article and what it covers and say whether or not it is useful to your search and why. If it has limitations say why. Here is an example from another site- Belsey, Catherine. Culture and the Real: Theorizing Cultural Criticism. London: Routledge, 2005. This book explores the ways in which culture produces ideas of ‘the real’ that are presented as objects of desire (the desire for foundation or completion, satisfaction or fulfilment) that remain unobtainable. Belsey’s perspective draws heavily on psychoanalytic theory, particularly Freud and Lacan, but is always lucid and directly engaged with contemporary issues, works of art and literature. Key terms that it investigates include: meaning, perspective, desire, the sublime and the postmodern. [At this point you would include comments on your own response to this, including how and why Belsey’s book might be important to your essay.] With thanks to the English Literature Department at the University of Edinburgh <[login to view URL]> [You should aim to present three ‘annotations’ of about 80 words each – certainly no more than 100 words – for this section of the task] C. Synopsis of an article. Now the synopsis of the article or chapter itself. Choose one of the texts you have annotated and elaborate on what you have already written. You will now go into much more detail about the content of the article and its usefulness to your topic or question. This will be easier because you have already begun to assess the piece and its value. [You should aim to present your synopsis in about 750-800 words.] All three parts of the Research Paper (Literature Search, Annotated Bibliography, and Synopsis) should be submitted via Turnitin on Blackboard. Assignment 2: Essay You are required to write one essay each of about 2000 words in length on the essay question. Essay Title: Examine the relationship between festivity and gender representation in Twelfth Night. Please note that this essay should be authentic as it will be submitted on turn it in! You are reminded that your response should demonstrate both your depth and breadth of reading in your chosen subject area. It should be presented in word-processed form and be presented in accordance with the MLA style guide. . Unless otherwise specified, you should refer to the work of two writers in your answer. The texts discussed should also be drawn from those studied on this module. In preparing for the essays, please remember the following learning outcomes for EN1217 Introduction to Renaissance Literature: On successful completion of this module a student will be able to: 1. Analyse and explore a range of Renaissance literature, and the critical debate surrounding it. 2. Recognise the importance of the relationship between Renaissance literature and its particular cultural, economic, historical and religious contexts. 3. Analyse the meaning and formal qualities of individual texts and groups of texts, and the linguistic diversity they contain. 4. Demonstrate your ability, both individually and with others, to undertake research. 5. Use, with understanding, an appropriate scholarly discourse. 6. Demonstrate an increased precision and thoroughness in written and oral communication through coursework assignments. **Please remember the following points for the presentation of your essay: a) Italicise titles of plays and use inverted commas for titles of short poems. b) Number pages c) Use at 11 pitch Arial or 12 pitch if you use Times New Roman d) Double or 1.5 spacing please with a decent margin for my comments. e) If you use indented paragraphs, please use a decent sized indent. f) If you block your paragraphs, please double space between paragraphs g) Please give line references for poems. h) For plays please give Act, Scene, line references for plays ie Act One, Scene Three line 26-39 would appear after a quote in brackets as either (1.3.26-29), or (I.iii.26-9). Within the body of your sentence it would appear in full ie ‘As Jones comments in Act One, Scene Three …’. Do not give page references for plays. i) Use MLA referencing in the body of the essay and follow MLA conventions for ‘Works Cited’ and ‘Works Consulted’ .
