My name is Gabriela, I'm a recent graduate from the Chinese Translation and Interpretation B.A of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria. Before starting my degree, I worked for 2 years as a freelance translator for an e-Commerce company. There, I was able to gain experience in translating the website content, including the translation of products and their descriptions, from Chinese/English to Portuguese. Throughout my BA in Translation, I enhanced my linguistics knowledge and acquired further and new experience in technical, professional, literary, and audiovisual translation.
As a practitioner and scholar of this art and its theory, I aim to contribute for the creation and connection of the worlds that words, expressions, and meanings build, by using my creative and technical skills the best I can, while also learning and improving in the process. I aspire to constantly refine my understanding of cultures and languages that I, directly or indirectly, work with, in order to reach and ensure the high-quality standards of each translation. I'd also like to continue to research, learn, discover, and write about translation theory, as well as other fields that intersect with translation and the translator, like the translation of not so studied genres and forms of entertainment, or the psychology of translation.
Because I believe that one always works better when involved with things they're passionate about, I sometimes like to mix and find the perfect balance between work/study and pleasure. A meaningful example of that is what I did as my degree's final project: I translated a manhua from Chinese to European Portuguese, and wrote a pioneering essay about the most important and relevant findings in the translation of manhua from Chinese to Portuguese.
Even though most of my main interests and passions belong inside the entertainment industry (gaming, films and series, light novels, comics, manhua, and donghua), and I'm deeply interested in opportunities that will allow me to achieve a good level of experience and expertise when it comes to projects related to those areas, I'm also open to work and use my skills and knowledge for other different types of projects and challenges.
Please feel free to contact me with any work or project proposals.
