For our mountain bike races, there is a need for competitors to stop at a stop sign on the course. Rather than have a volunteer stand at the stop sign to check that a competitor comes to a stop, it might be easier to develop an electronic solution. This stopping is necessary to ensure all competitors start from the same location.
I think the electronic part of the project is relatively simple for the experienced Freelancer. However, some testing/adjustment may need to be made to the sonar sensor to ensure it is working at desired. This system will be deployed outside and I have not been impressed with PIR sensors in the past - so hopefully the Sonar Sensor solution may work (I am also open to any other ideas a Freelancer may have!)
The adjustment will come in the measurements and what we determine as a 'stopped' rider and 'departed' rider. The most important thing here is consistency. I don't mind if we have a little 'play' in the system - as long as its easy to understand and the results are replicated.
Ideally, I would like the solution mounted to a pole as shown in the attached images. I am not expecting the Freelancer to undertake fitment to a box or pole, but please bear this in mind regarding mounting and setup.
Hardware:
- I have several Arduino boards and batteries from an unfinished project that I could use
- The most affordable sensors I have found would be these [login to view URL] and picture attached - but I am open to suggestions.
- I need to construct 7 of these units.

Propose using a ToF sensor such as the VL53L1X. It has a much narrower detection cone that ultrasonic sensors.
