After seeing your samples and description, the best way to keep the hat as you describes and gives a nice face to the character is the way I have done the man laid down on the hill. Now you describes the scene with lighting and cloudy ! if the poster needs to be darker let me know.I have worked with the panton you refer ! can change colors etc..
