I am converting songs on a tape cassette to MP3 with a device. I tried two apps so far: Audacity and the NCH's Golden Records Vinyl to CD. However, I keep hearing sound problems when I play the recorded sound in both software. There should be no sound problems to begin with because the audio quality on the tape cassettes is crystal clear. I need someone to pinpoint me in the right direction: which software should I use? Which settings should I use? I will pay $12 CAD immediately for your assistance.

Hi there, get a decent microphone, play the tapes on a stereo, adjust your microphone close to the speaker and you will get the best result. You will be able to monitor the quality and adjust it, even with audacity. Believe me, it will work. I have done it several times. And you get awesome quality.

This is Robert again... 1) How did you transfer the tapes to mp3? In my system I have a direct input audio wire. 2) What player are you testing with? 3) In Audacity, are you doing too much to the audio. Like 'allowing Clipping', or other fancy things that might change the end product. 4) Are you playing the audio with the same medium? Original and final. In my system I can play casette-tapes through the same medium. If you cannot, how can you tell they are really different? Again why did you use MP3? I don't understand the use of this format, if you are an audio enthusiast? I stated this in my last proposal. Use a loss-less medium, even windows 'wav' if you must. I believe with Cassettes, it might be wise to turn off the Dolby-B, C... whatever. Then with your Audacity do the noise reduction on that side. It might do better. I would experiment with that. I've done that once.

The most logical problem that comes to mind is that something is wrong with your recording device, do you have another that you could try just to rule it out? If that is not an option, Audacity has a noise removal tool that should fix the majority of the problem, if not all of it. It works better than you might think. :P
