Background
The National Financial Educators Council (NFEC) is a for-profit financial education resource supplier of educational products such as educator training, hard-copy curriculum for educators to deliver to students in a live setting, online learning centers, promotional campaigns and private labeling of all aforementioned.
Project Brief
The NFEC is seeking a financial expert that understands personal financial matters and the financial system for Mexico’s citizens.
We are modifying our US English financial education course to suit the needs of those that reside in Mexico.
Please note, the primary purpose of this project is NOT translation or translation transcription. Being fluent in both English and Mexican Spanish is required, but direct translation from one language to the other is NOT the primary purpose of this project. You must have a sound understanding of financial systems in Mexico.
The NFEC understands that the financial issues that face different countries’ citizens are very similar. Our curriculum was developed for the US markets, economy and citizens, but the curriculum will be applicable to Mexico’s citizens as well – in a general sense.
What the NFEC seeks is to localize the educational materials to Mexico’s needs. For example, the US has the Internal Revenue Service to handle the population’s taxation; Mexico will obviously have its own agency with slightly different methods of contact and processes. Another example, US citizens are subject to the credit ratings of the big 3 credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian and Trans Union; what of Mexico? A final example, investment into US citizen’s 401k or IRA is pre-deposit taxed or taxed on withdraw; what about Mexico’s retirement account processes/laws?
The selected contractor will need a firm understanding of financial markets and processes from both the consumer and governmental viewpoints.
Responsibilities
• You will NOT need to be directly translating our curriculum from English into Spanish. Translation transcription services have already been contracted out. You will, however, be required to review documents already translated into Spanish and make suggestions of areas of improvement. You will be reviewing said documents for:
o Accurate Localization of the Translated Materials. The differences between Mexican regional dialects is much smaller than say, the different between Mexican Spanish and Columbian Spanish. You will check for localization of translation for Mexico in the most common sense.
o Accurate Financial & Governmental Terminology. Government Agencies, respected financial brands, financial jargon and other statements regarding personal finance in which a word-for-word “direct translation” does not fit the meaning of the statement. The meaning and relatability is more important than the literal translation.
o Economic Terminology. Discovery of any US-specific economic terminology (USD, IRS, or Credit Union for example) should be swapped out for its Mexican equivalency.
• Review approximately 40 pages of lessons and share insight on areas that are needed to be modified to meet the needs of people of Mexico.
• Attend conference calls with our US based curriculum development team.
• Make necessary adjustments in the 40 pages and deliver in written form (English) for our English-speaking editors to edit.
• Be available for a follow-up conference call to discuss changes.
