I wish to setup a proxy/tunnel for the purposes of lowering latency in games. Some examples of this can be: [login to view URL] [login to view URL] [login to view URL] I want to set this up for non commercial use so my gaming clan can use it. As I understand it, a basic form of this can be done by using PuTTY and proxifier(No software/GUI needed) I don't believe it is very difficult to setup, I had someone help me with this a few years back but I shut my VPS service down as it was not being used. A brief explanation: Basically for anyone that connects to a game server not near the location of the game server they can have a ping of 400+. By utilizing PuTTY and proxifier(or something similar) to force the game/application to run through this proxy/tunnel that is near the game server, it allows the latency/ping to be reduced for better gaming performance by giving the traffic a more direct route to the server. More details: Does not need to have multiple locations/server like you may see in the commercial examples. Does not need a GUI Requires authentication (If possible restricted to one IP per account at a time) Setup through a Linux VPS(or something similar)

As the other users have said, this is entirely possible. Probably the best way to do this would be a VPN, we can pretty easily create users on there, no risk of shell access, reasonably secure. The downside is that all traffic will go through this VPN. Not terrible, but certainly something to consider. We can also look at proxies, the only thing to keep in mind would be whether the game in question has any sort of ban on multiple users coming from the same IP as your external IP will appear to be the same for all connected users. I can give you better details if you can give me an idea of which game and the approximate location of the server you want your traffic to end up at.

It certainly is possible to tunnel over PuTTY, I use this feature all the time. All you will need is a wrapper for running your game executable in, if the game doesn't have SOCKS proxy settings already built-in. However, one issue you will likely encounter is that most muli-player game network packets are sent over UDP instead of TCP, and proxies only handle TCP traffic. If this issue does arise, you may have to run a VPN server, which I can help you setup as well.
