Which IoT protocol should I use for my project

It all depends on the device size, power available, data size, volume and distance. Bluetooth is only good for a few feet but has a reasonable data rate and is compatible with other devices (phones) while low power. Lora is very low power (years) and long range (miles) but has very low data rates. Does the system need to communicate with existing infrastructures not under your control? How many devices need to communicate together? Lora gateways can handle 1000 devices but at a very low rate of transmission (minute between retransmits) Raw rf based systems with a data protocol like PJON (open source) can communicate medium volumes of data to the limits of the radio and antenna. Most others mentioned fall in between, are point to point with varied but higher power requirements and on average, shorter ranges. I’ve worked with generic rf transceivers, Bluetooth, wifi and Lora radios using mcu’s like the esp32/8266 that communicate with each other or via wifi to cloud based api’s.
