Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency recently caused thousands of families panic when it turned a regular drill into a Ballistic Missile warning. There was havoc around the whole state. The root of it all -- bad UI design.

Attached is an image of the emergency commands page.

Instead of clicking on “DRILL - PACOM (CDW) - STATE ONLY”, the handler clicked on “PACOM (CDW) - STATE ONLY”.

WHAT WE WANT YOU TO DO
1. Design a user-friendly Emergency Commands page.
2. Make each emergency command distinguishable from the others.
3. Think outside the box!

THE RULES
1. All emergency commands must stay the same (BMD False Alarm, Amber Alert (CAE) - Kauai Country Only, etc.). No editing of its copy.
2. All entries must be new and original.
3. Submissions must be in .JPG format.
4. In the description field, tell us about your entry.
5. You are allowed to submit as many entries as you wish but you can only win once.

1st Runner-Up: US$100
2nd Runner-Up: US$50

    Yeah, for every signal toggled or activated there will be a pop up message which will ask for confirmation!!

    Hello everyone. I justed wanted to tell that I have specifically not added any sort of passcode option as there is no enough time for 2-3 step confirmation at such a level. As it is more confusing and creates panic. No offence, its just my personal thought and it does'nt disregard anybody.
    Hope these proves to be a healthy contribution for Hawaii. May all remain safe and sound in Hawaii as well as the whole World.

      Hi. Yes I can understand, that's why I am not against it. Restricting is a good option but do you think when in actual situation it could be easily handled? Like you know everyone does not have quick and active reflexes.

    I really do not seem clear about the indications of alerts that need to be added, I do not know if it is because they lack logic, or they have not been able to convey what is needed.

    It is clear to me that a system is required that prevents an error from happening as it happened recently. However, the error occurred in principle because they are not clear about the difference between one element and another, at the programmer level, leaving aside the visual aspect.

    I have an idea of how to prevent the error from happening again, but I do not know how to organize the elements because I do not understand the system.

    Could you better clarify which are the real alerts, which are the simulations and the level of importance of those alerts? Thank you very much.
