Animate a face through expressions of joy and pain

Konkurransesammendrag

I need 29 new drawings of the face on this mask, with the facial expression changing following the Wong-Baker faces pain scale. The expressions will range from joy to absolute agony. You may add tears, change the shape of the eyes, hat, etc. Your illustrations should exactly follow the style of the original drawing - same line width, etc. You are copying this face, but changing the expressions. Think of this like taking an existing character and adding in additional frames of an animation. The original mask looks like a 2 on the Wong-Baker scale to me, so that would be like the 6th drawing in a sequence of 30.

Black and white line drawings only - no color.

I need these illustrations delivered as .ai or svg files so I can laser cut them to create a new mask for each of the drawings. Ideally, these drawings will be delivered arranged on several 32 x 40" illustrator artboards so they are prepped for printing and laser cutting.

I am attaching a reference illustrator file where the mask is scanned at the correct scale. The lines that are red dashes are the cut lines for the laser cutter. The stroke on these lines needs to be set to .002 pt. Please maintain the padding space between the cut line and the drawing.

Some ideas for the illustration - In the first drawing, the hat could be straight up and the mouth could be a big, open smile with a cut out area for the mouth. You can also use the classic "comedy and tragedy" theatre masks for an idea of the range of expressions.

You do not need to make all 29 drawings for your initial contest entry. You can share drawings representing your interpretation of 0, 4, 6, 8, and 10 on the Wong-Baker Faces Pain scale.

Hi, since this is a mask do you need the holes for the eyes to be cut out all the time? Or can the eyes remain uncut? Or maybe partially not hollow? It will give more options for depicting the range of expressions.

      Hi Polina,

Good question. Yes - the eyes will need to be cut out at all times, so it can function like a mask. However, the eyes do not need to remain perfect circles. You can change the shape to fit the expression. They just need to be open enough so that someone could still see through the holes.
